Development

What is this?

This is where you can influence the development of The Hit, by deciding which features I will work on next, and yes, by giving me money.

Disclaimer

This is also an experiment, and if it works, a completely new method of financing a game. I want to be as open about the development as possible, and I'm curious to find out if this kind of funding model could work.

Ideally, if I can cover my living expenses purely with donations, then a fully-playable single-player version of The Hit will be released for free, and I will use any profits to fund a more ambitious muliplayer version. Ultimately though, I want to reach as large an audience as possible, and I reserve the right to do whatever I think will achieve that aim. If there is a paid release, I'll make sure all donors who have given more than £30 will receive a copy of the game, and if the game is released on Steam, a Steam key.

The projected development cost of each feature is likely to fluctuate, which is one of the reasons (the other being abject terror at the popular reaction) why I'm not listing numbers below. Some things will be easier for me to purchase or contract someone else to do. If I think I can add a feature for the amount raised, it will be added to the development schedule. As I'm still polishing the core systems, it may take several months before a feature is implemented, so please don't be disappointed if your favourite feature isn't added immediately.

Also, please don't be upset if I don't implement a feature in exactly the way you were expecting. So far, this has been a solo project, and I can't afford to emulate AAA titles with budgets in the tens of millions. If you have any questions about how I'm planning to implement something, or wish to offer suggestions or advice, my email address is at the foot of the page. Also, I'll keep this page updated with my plans regarding each feature.

Most of these features are already planned for development, and when I can get round to working on those, I'll add a note to that effect. Some aren't planned for the current version, but will be added to the schedule if demand is high enough.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to getting the game into your hands.

Features

Traffic and Vehicles

Traffic

Status: In development

Cars are just static scenery at the moment. Moving traffic isn't currently a high priority, and driveable vehicles are even further down the list.

Taxis

Status: Planned (requires Traffic)

Player will be able to hail a taxi, and travel quickly to the target's vicinity.

Driveable Vehicles

Status: Planned (requires Traffic)

Players will be able to own vehicles, with keys existing as physical objects in the game world. Players will be able to store, give, take, throw (and probably lose) their car keys.

Motorbikes

Status: Planned (requires Traffic)

Rideable Trains

Status: Planned (requires Traffic)

Once implemented, players will be able to travel on subway trains, as well as carry out hits, plant bombs, etc.

Driveable Motorbikes

Status: Planned (requires Motorbikes)

Motorbikes will operate similarly to cars, but will be much better at negotiating traffic jams.

Environments

Main City Environment

Status: Ongoing development

The city exists as a static demo scene with NPCS, and an endless version without NPCs. When the current version of the NPC AI is complete, I'll add NPCs to the endless city, and release a demo.

This is going to require a lot of work, but I'm designing a simple and intuitive system which will allow the player to craft their own weapons and equipment using modular components.

I'll be holding auditions for voice-acting, when the time comes. Adding the voices will be easy enough, and will require adding a 'talk on phone' option.

I'm not planning to add this any time soon, but figure it's something people want. If there's any artists who would like their work featured, please drop me an email.
